Walter Davies Merry III “Dave”, 74, beloved husband of Beverly Black Merry, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, September 27, 2021, surrounded by his family.
Mr. Merry was born on May 16, 1947 in Columbia, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Walter Davies Merry Jr. and Elma Garrison Merry. Dave graduated from AC Flora High School, Class of 1965, Clemson University, Class of 1969, and received his JD from University of South Carolina Law School in 1972. Dave has been Clemson’s Cheerleader and Mascot, President of Tiger Brotherhood, and has always been proud to be a Lifetime Clemson Tiger and a member of the Numeral Society / SAE. Dave reached the rank of Eagle Scout as a young man, was a senior member of the Providence Presbyterian Church, and his love for the outdoors led him to be an active member and leader of the Rocky Mountain Elk. Foundation and Ducks Unlimited. Dave was made a second lieutenant in the United States Army and served in the Judge Advocate General’s corps. After his stint in the military, Dave practiced law in Colombia and served as Deputy Estates Judge for Richland County (SC) and appointed by the SC Supreme Court as a Special Court Judge of the 5th Circuit judicial. After moving upstate, he served as Director and National Sales Associate for Southland Log Homes, retiring after more than 20 years of service.
Survivors include his beloved wife Beverly Black Merry of the house, his children, Nancy “Nan” Merry Sammataro (Sam) of Columbia SC, Walter Davies Merry IV (Theresa) of Isle of Palms SC, Grace Merry Parsons of Columbia SC , Jennifer Shirley Nicholson (Scott) of Easley SC, and Jessica Shirley Thompson (Derrick) of Easley SC; her grandchildren, Bayden Merry, Brooke Merry, Lucy Mills Sammataro, Will Parsons, Stiles Nicholson and Lizzie Thompson; a godmother, Linda Sisson from Idaho.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Merry was predeceased by a special uncle, Dr. Olen B. Garrison.
The family would like to express their thanks for the wonderful help and care provided by the CVICU unit and the Step-Down unit at Bon Secours St. Francis and Wren Hospice.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 11:00 am at the Providence Presbyterian located at 4000 SC-153, Greenville South Carolina, 29611. Family will receive friends in Ellenburg Hall after the service . Face covering and social distancing are in demand.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Dave’s memory to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, 5705 Grant Creek Road Missoula MT, Providence Presbyterian Church, or any organization of his choosing.
A private funeral at Providence Presbyterian will follow at a later date.
